London Trip!!!
Myself and the rest of the fine art year went on a trip to London
recently and it really was very inspiring and circulated lots of new ideas into
my mind. We visited a few sited throughout the day, the most important being
the Bloomberg New Contemporaries at the South London Gallery, Hyper Mesh at the
Assembly Point Gallery and the APT studios/gallery.
In the Bloomberg New Contemporaries, I enjoyed many of the
pieces but I had a few close favourites. One of the first pieces I came across
was by Jack Burton ‘Hotel, Night Shop, The Smell of Fig Trees’ a multimedia
pieces that depicts a domestic scene of a bathroom layered with doodles of
other random objects and gesture which have some personal connection to the
space and artist. The mute colours of the piece also make it stand out, which
is quite compelling actually.
‘Displacement’ by Mohammed Sami was also one of my favourites
from the day. An acrylic painting on linen that shows a two-prong plug lying
the floor next to a three prong plug socket. A smart metaphor for being out of
place. Although they serve the same purpose, they don’t quite fit, that ultimate
feeling of being useless, therefore displaced.
Inside of the same room as the piece by Sami there was quite
an interesting curation of pieces one being ‘Hristo Smirnenski blok.70 entrance
A fl.9 ap.23’ by George Stamenov. An old-fashioned box television was placed in
the corner of the room on the floor, a looped video of a glass on a table
slowly getting closer and closer to the edge and then turning into some strange
shape. This piece plays on suspense and make me think quite a bit about the
suspense in horror/thriller movies. Especially as the aesthetic of it matches
those classic horror/thrillers such as silence of the lambs and psycho. Definitely
my favourite piece from the day!
I enjoyed a few pieces from the other exhibitions we went to
such as the sculptures by Holly Hendry’s in Hyper Mesh, but I don’t think they
relate as much to my practise as the pieces from the New Contemporaries. If you’re
around London make sure to go and check them out!
