Horrors of the Home

Cornelia Parker 'Psycho Barn'

I have set myself a small project to get myself back into making and being productive again. my studio has been far too bare lately. I have decided to move on from the sci-fi, fantasy and horror movie fascination, I realise now it was more of a phase and pass time. I’m now looking into the sets of these movies and how they translate into reality. I think this could be the start of something really good and exciting in my practice. I feel more in control of the work now and where its going. I have been doing a lot of research lately and have found a great fascination with the works pf Rachel Whiteread, Cornelia Parker and Sarah Lucas! I have liked their works for a long time but I find that it is more relevant to my work now, as I think I may be heading into the realms of the domestic within my work. I was looking into the bates motel house from the movie psycho and came across the piece by Cornelia Parker ‘Psycho Barn’ which is a replica of the house. From this my research stemmed out and I came across Rachel Whiteread and Sarah Lucas and will be looking at them more in the future.

As a starting point into my journey of exploring the domestic I decided to name this short project ‘Horrors of the home’. I had a neon sign saying love in my house and have been wanting to do something with it for a while. The domestic for me is everything to do with the home, mostly the objects and connections that make a home what it is. The most intimate and private part of the home in my point of view is the bed, and so I was experimenting at home using this word love and placing it on my bed in the dark. It has an almost eerie and dark quality to it. something I find really interesting is that the neon sign reflects ones from similar dodgy looking motels in horror films, much like the bates motel. This sign of a bright red, shining and reflecting off of the black and white bedsheets is visually very beautiful but ugly in some ways. The fact that the word love is on the bed can mean many things, sexual love, as that is where people would think of sexual activities to take place, but a bed is also for sleeping which can be a part of self-love. These different versions of the word love are very interesting to me and made it quite interesting to explore. There is also a small part of me that thinks towards violent thoughts of love within the home when I look at this piece.
Going forward I definitely want to explore the domestic more, it feels right this time and the context and substance is definitely there to be built upon!
