Coastal Currents Festival

Image
We had an amazing opportunity to go to Hastings this week to go and see the Coastal Currents Festival! The day was packed with seeing lots of art and also getting to have our own personal tour of artist studios and be able to ask them questions and have a conversation with them about what life after study is like for an artist and how to support yourself, etc. something I think we have all, especially me been worrying about lately now that we’re in our second year. Hastings View from funicular lift We started off by visiting the Jerwood Gallery to see the Mark Wallinger show that was on. I found his work quite interesting but it only held my interest for a short amount of time before I wanted to move onto somewhere else. Art Bunkers

Bunker in studio As part of Uncensored we got told to create “Art Bunkers” to keep our work hidden from the world until the big reveal. I don’t know how I feel about this way of working, on one hand I think that it is better because it saves me from the fear of judgement of what others will think of my work, but I also think that working in secret could make me lazier in my working as there won’t be as much pressure on me to get work done. Updates on the reveal will come soon. Inside Bunker

To be completely honest I didn’t really like this piece or the recommended research material we were given, I wasn’t able to relate to any of the options we were given and I didn’t enjoy this summer project. That being said I did learn a lot from it. whilst researching the various parts we were given I looked at work by Nan Goldin, I also looked at the #metoo movement and at various works by women that showed a lot of vulnerability. This sense of bravery by showing work that is vulnerable really got me thinking about the contradiction within it and how they both work hand in hand. I chose to work with more 2D and digital works over the summer for ease mainly, I had some sculptural ideas I wante...
