Final Piece (developed from scanography)
Following on from my last post, as promised here is a complete run through of my final piece for my first unit of rotations on my foundation art and design course. As mentioned in previous posts my project was all about mental health, especially anxiety and depression and looking at how this distorts and deforms peoples health.
My final piece was developed from the scanography, which I loved creating and I ended up making a mixed media collage. I captured all the progress and stages on my camera, it took me around a week to ten days to create this piece and I am extremely happy with the outcome.
So, to start creating the piece I selected my favourite scan, which was the one with caution tape around my mouth. I feel this represented my anxiety well, I have to be cautious of what I say because I don't want people to pity me and/or think I'm crazy. There's always an underlying fear that when I open my mouth a hole will open beneath my feet and I will be sucked in with no way to dig myself out. Anxiety is a terrible thing that leads to depression and paranoia and honestly sometimes this effects me. Every day is different, I have good days and bad days. Art is the way I balance myself out and acts as my therapy, without it I would go mad. And so, I thought it was more important than ever, especially during a hard time in my life to create this masterpiece and leave all my emotions, fear, thoughts, worries on the paper. Mixed media collage seemed to cover all this well. Most of the hand and face was made from constellations and maps of places I have been and places I'm going. Looking to the stars has been a strong metaphor in my life to reach for something greater. the skin was also made up of red and pink shades of card, ripped into appropriate sized for the area and also taking in to account the shape of the area. I then photocopied the caution tape and colour copied it to x250 after much trial and error of sizing. The eye was coloured with watercolour and ink. The background was completely made from ripped black card and once that was stuck and dried i went to the top of the paper and applied water, then spread dark blue ink so that it would run down the page to give a subtle drowning effect. Once The base was finished I applied magazine cutouts of words such as 'Think hell?', 'Freak'. 'Who am I?', etc. I added bubble wrap to create texture within the piece and I then used a spray diffuser with ink to blow black, pink and purple ink into the piece to create a gradient between the colours of card instead of solid break lines between colour. This worked really well and really made the piece. The finishing touches were to add broken glass to the piece. Small shards were placed in the eye and on certain areas of the face and hands, where in the scan the flesh would be on the glass. For the hair I simply used cotton string that I soaked in PVA glue for five minutes and then placed carfully on the paper.
Below are some images of the progress and stages I went through while creating this Final Piece.
