Development from Scans

Following from my last post on scanography I recently finished my project on the human form. I further developed the scans into ink pieces, collages and prints and I am very happy with the amount of experimentation I did.

Below are the images of some of the pieces of experimentation I created.

On the ink pieces I placed rock salt on while it was still wet. The rock salt absorbs the pigment from the ink and creates an interesting effect and texture in the ink on the paper. I drew with black marker pen around some of the features to define it more, it didn't turn out the way I had hoped but it created an effect that reminds me of graffiti. I prefer the bright blue ink piece to the darker one as I like how the ink has run down the back and created unplanned patterns on the paper. I particularly like working with ink for this theme. I am focusing on mental health especially with anxiety and depression. Using ink and letting it flow without control makes a drowning sensation that ties in perfectly with the feeling I wanted to create.

The collage piece is very interesting as it has lots parts to it that include maps and constellations, words and glass. For my final piece I decided to create a Collage and this will be seen in my next post. The maps in the piece signify the places I have been, my life journey. The constellations are a part of me, the part that looks to something bigger and knows that things will get better. I think that is important to have something to look to and for me its always been the stars and so I wanted to show this in the work. I included words like breathe, the freak, think hell, life, me? as a reflection of things that I think about. The glass shows fragility and sharpness of pain. I found it very interesting to work with.

I also created some prints from the scans that include Lino prints and Dry point. I enjoyed the process of this very much and the outcome even more. I printed on hand made paper for the Lino prints, my favourite was the red paper with Asian symbols on it. the symbols are gold and shine through the ink from the print. My favourite of the prints is the dry point. I absolutely love the way it turned out even though the words are backwards as I forgot they would print this way.

I created a drawing from denim. This was not difficult but very time consuming. Every piece was roughly measured and cut to fit perfectly into the piece. Once it was all cut to shape and I had stuck it down using bonda web I went over the piece with some machine embroidery to add some colour and more detail to the piece. It also created some texture in the piece. Another experiment was painting with acrylic. I did this with quite a dry brush and little water. I made the piece slightly darker than the original image and I think that it has worked quite well.

Hope you like the pieces and watch out for my next post on my final piece.
