New context: Cut and Shut
After Uncensored we got given our new brief called Cut and
Shut. This was the opening statement of our brief...
“Sometimes we need to
make honest and frank acknowledgements
about our work in
order to refine it, or make it more relevant.
Sometimes we need to
edit things out, other times we need to bring
new elements into
play. Sometimes a combination of both is
required. It’s about
selecting/editing, but most of all it’s about
experimenting...”
With this in mind I decided to take a look back at my previous
work and have a long think about what works, what needed improving and what
needed to be cut out completely. After much thought I think that I have decided
to keep my context of looking at the female body in comparison and relation to classical
Greco-Roman statue/sculpture. Also, to continue experimenting with colour and
how this fluid motion interacts with the audience, the colour and motion can
also be looked at in contrast to the plain white sculpture. I want to
experiment more in wax and have already started doing so, this is a long
process and I have already worked quite a lot in wax in my first year of
university so I need to be careful that I don’t continue with the exact same ‘safe’
work.
I have created a series of wax figurines of the female body,
similar to my works from last year but in different poses and postures. The body
size is also a more natural one. I first had to make the figure from clay and
the cast it in plaster. From there I had to pour the wax into the cast and wait
for it to set. The process sounds simple but it is more time consuming and
delicate that I first thought. Thankfully due to my past experimentation's, etc I
was able to do this with ease and it only took me a couple of days to make the
three figures. Below are some images of the process and the result. I am excited
to explore with this mixed media, using 2D and 3D elements combined.
