Coastal Currents Festival
We had an amazing opportunity to
go to Hastings this week to go and see the Coastal Currents Festival! The day
was packed with seeing lots of art and also getting to have our own personal
tour of artist studios and be able to ask them questions and have a conversation
with them about what life after study is like for an artist and how to support
yourself, etc. something I think we have all, especially me been worrying about
lately now that we’re in our second year.

| Hastings View from funicular lift |
We started off by visiting the Jerwood
Gallery to see the Mark Wallinger show that was on. I found his work quite
interesting but it only held my interest for a short amount of time before I wanted
to move onto somewhere else. The art collection that the gallery had upstairs
was really interesting and I would definitely recommend if you’re near by the
area to go and have a look. We then got to go and have a look around the town independently
to go and find some of the various coastal currents festival art works that were
displayed around the Old town. I had the chance to experience the work of Emily
Peasgood ‘The Illusion of Conscious Thought’ which is a sound piece installed in
the east and west Hill funicular lifts. The piece I found quite interesting and
also funny because of what it was, but the lift to the top I found really
exciting and I loved it. the view from the top was also breath taking and a huge
bonus to the day!

| Jim Hobbs in studio |
We split into groups and got to
have personal tours with artists around their studio. We got to see Becky Beasley,
Sophie Barber and Jim Hobbs studios and this for me was such an amazing
opportunity as I got to have discussions with practicing artists and how they’re
careers have developed after leaving study.
A highlight of the day for me was
a private screening of ‘Hypno Project’ by Doug Fishbone at the Kino Theatre. This
piece really opened up my mind to different questions and possibilities about
the world we live in, it was also surreal being in an old-fashioned theatre by
ourselves and being able to experience that.
