Final Piece of the 2nd self-initiated

We finally got a self initiated brief and I am so excited to get started on this and have more freedom to explore what I want to. Straight away I knew that I want to work with the body, specifically the female form. After reading about Donna Haraway and her work it has really influenced me and got me thinking more about woman’s roles today and about reproduction also, so I think that these may be some interesting things to pursue.

I had to make the body out of clay first and then we would do a 2-part mould out of plaster. I spent about 2-3 hours and made the body out of clay, I based it off of a recent life drawing that I have done of a woman laying down. I decided not to add arms, feet or a head to the piece and to keep it quite Greek statue style instead. I then got small pieces of acetate to create a barrier in the half way mark of the body, or the horizon line. This is to make sure the plaster doesn’t stick together when pulling it apart. I found it quite difficult not to get any under cuts and had to get the technician to help me quite a bit but we figured it out eventually. I used crayons in the wax to give it colour and it worked out really well for a first try with coloured wax. For the first candle I used only one colour but for the others I layered the colour, doing this through cooling intervals. This was when the wax melts, it pools in different colours and created some interesting effects.

I am really happy with the outcome of these candle pieces and it is definitely something I will pursue in the future. I think that it could be some of my strongest work so far.

We finally revealed Uncensored this week and I can say that It was indeed quite stressful. I struggled quite a lot during this part of the unit, mostly because I had a nasty bit of artist block and just wasn’t able to formulate ideas into physical works. My tutor suggested just cracking on with some collages to get me back into the flow of working and this helped a lot. I was able to produce a few interesting pieces, influenced by classical Greco-Roman statue/sculpture. The results of these were unexpected and quite fluid as I did not plan anything, I just created in the moment, I found this way of working for me very strange but it produced new outcomes I am interested to explore. I also tried working with different materials such as image transfer onto wood and metal. After finishing my essay on gender performativity, I was really inspired with what kind of context I want to include in my work. I have been trying for a long time to move away from the fluid painting and classical sculpture interests, but I couldn’t move anywhere as I had no idea where I wanted to go and so I was just floating around for the last few weeks working on more written work than physical pieces.  After finishing the essay, I started to look more into horror and sci-fi movies. I became really inspired by the visual settings of horror movies, Mostly the houses and the role they play in the settings of the movies. Horror has always been something consistent in my life, the thrill of the movie and the adrenaline rush it gives. The spooky and gloomy aesthetic takes me away into a different world that personifies these demons that cannot be seen in day to day life. Cut-and-Shut @artsspaceportsmouth

We had our first show of the year at Arts space Portsmouth. The show is Called Cut-and-Shut and had the amazing opportunity to go and be a part of the set-up team for the show. I am quite interested in curation and so I really enjoyed being able to go and help put up this show and get to know everyone’s work better. My Digital Collage was also chosen to be the artwork for the posters and flyers which is really exciting! The piece that I made for the show was a development from the previous work I have been making so far this year. I continued to develop the fluid painting and trying to evolve the technique to make the texture more gaseous, like that of a surface planet. I also used one of the wax pieces I had made and decided to incorporate this into the piece, merging 2D painting and 3D sculpture to create a multidisciplinary piece.
